Implications of the budget for NHS non-executive directors | 6 December

Date: 06 December 2024

Time: 10.00 – 11.00

Location: Virtual, Zoom

At our final NHS non-executives peer-to-peer session of 2024, we will be exploring what the autumn budget actually means for the work of NHS boards, coupled with the secretary of state’s recent statements about a return to league tables, sackings and an insistence of productivity.

There has been no new money for this year, but a promise of significant investment next year. Common sense suggests that boards need to double down on making sure fiscal plans are achieved at no long-term damaging cost, while at the same time starting to build the new leadership fluencies that will lead the collaborations and developments for the coming three years.

Perhaps the lesson from the American election is that hope cannot eclipse lived experience. The various post-mortems suggest that inflation is one of the factors that drove voters to Trump.

The new Labour government want and need public services to ‘feel different’, and the budget is a major step but must be followed up quickly for a real change in how services are received by the public.

This month’s webinar will be looking at the role of NHS non-executives in catalysing the useful discussions and actions that will help boards work through both the short term and preparing for the coming three years.
