Peter Allanson

He has worked as a company secretary in the private and public sectors for over half of a career lasting over 46 years. Major change programmes have featured heavily in his experience including mergers and acquisitions in the private sector, work to set up the main NHS regulator and establishing a slimmed down and refocused Department of Health.

Since joining GGI, Peter has worked with a number of NHS trusts on major board reviews, with housing associations, arms-length bodies, regulators, the voluntary sector including the Royal British Legion and Yorkshire County Cricket Club on a mix of governance reviews, board development and helping to improve the quality of board materials. He is most closely associated with the core governance and recovery work undertaken by GGI and regularly contributes to blogs. He has spoken at webinars hosted by GGI and NHS Providers and also chairs events of this nature. He also devised and delivers several of the GGI Academy’s training programmes.

At Guy’s and St Thomas’ Peter worked closely with the chairman, board and council of governors to develop systems and arrangements to provide assurance, governance and delivery within a values-driven environment with an open and transparent culture and a restlessness for change and improvement. These aims were acknowledged by the trust being rated ‘outstanding’ in the CQC’s well-led domain.

Earlier in his career, Peter was a civil servant in the Department of Health and in the Manpower Services Commission, where he became private secretary to the

chairman. He also worked for 15 years for what is now CBRE, one of the largest commercial real estate companies in the world. He spent time in CBRE’s financial services operations then as HR director during a period of immense change when the partnership incorporated, was acquired by a US company and then bought and integrated one of its mid-sized rivals. He ended his time there as director of administration for the UK and Europe.

Peter is a trustee of the Danes Education Multi Academy Trust comprised of ten Hertfordshire schools. These include the highly regarded Clement Danes school and the innovative Elstree Arts Academy.

Peter’s original ambition was to sing professionally and he has maintained his interests originally as a classical performer and recitalist with a number of recordings to his credit and now as a sought-after musical director for amateur musical theatre companies in Hertfordshire. Recent productions have included Crazy for you, Kipps, Shrek – the musical, Barnum and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. He is married and he and his wife have, between them, five children and four grandchildren.
