Richard is a people-focused, values-driven and well-networked NHS chief executive and board leader. He has extensive experience of organisational, operational and service leadership, leading and improving the performance, quality governance, strategy development and cultural change of organisations. An effective multi-agency and system leader, Richard uses humour and an emphasis on clarity of objectives, prioritisation, teamwork and staff engagement, to deliver objectives.
Richard has 31 years’ NHS experience, having served on the boards of seven NHS trusts for 20 years. He has served as chief executive of Wye Valley NHS Trust, Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust and Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Trust. His career highlights include leading both Wye Valley and Walsall NHS Trusts out of the special measures regime and leading Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Trust to deliver the brand new, 732-bedded hospital, The Midland Metropolitan University Hospital, which opened in October 2024.
