GGI Breakfast Webinar - The New NHS: ICS Series | 2 February 2022 | Zoom Conference Call

19 January 2022

Last year the Good Governance Institute ran a series of events about future ICS and systems work, and developed a number of briefings. There has been a real appetite and requests for further breakfast meetings to be held on the subject matter. Therefore, we are working on a further series of events and topics that we will host over the coming months.

The first in this year’s series, ‘Systems and Governance in an Integrated Care Board', will focus on the role of the director of governance/corporate affairs for an Integrated Care Board (ICB), a crucial role in ensuring that the ICB functions effectively and the core purposes of ICSs are met.

Guided by an ICS chair and director of governance, the webinar will explore the challenges and the opportunities of the role, and key priorities for 2022. It will also be a great opportunity to share thoughts and develop your networks.

The format of these meetings will be input from a couple of speakers on their own thoughts and experience, then it will open up to the attendees for a facilitated open discussion encouraging comments, questions and answers.

Peter Allanson, Principal Consultant GGI

Peter Allanson joined GGI in October 2019 as a principal consultant having spent the previous 10 years as trust secretary and director of corporate affairs at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.

He has worked as a company secretary in the private and public sectors for over half of a career lasting over 43 years. Major change programmes have featured heavily in his experience including mergers and acquisitions in the private sector, work to set up the main NHS regulator and establishing a slimmed down and refocused Department of Health.

Since joining GGI, Peter has worked with a number of NHS trusts on major board reviews, with housing associations, arms length bodies and a newly established regulator on a mix of governance reviews, board development and helping to improve the quality of board materials. He is most closely associated with the core governance and recovery work undertaken by GGI and has been a contributor to blogs, the COVID-19 bulletins and the current series of Illuminations.

At Guy’s and St Thomas’ Peter worked closely with the chairman, board and council of governors to develop systems and arrangements to provide assurance, governance and delivery within a values-driven environment with an open and transparent culture and a restlessness for change and improvement. These aims were acknowledged by the trust being rated ‘outstanding’ in the CQC’s well-led domain.

Earlier in his career, Peter was a civil servant in the Department of Health and in the Manpower Services Commission, where he became private secretary to the chairman. He also worked for 15 years for what is now CBRE, one of the largest commercial real estate companies in the world. He spent time in CBRE’s financial services operations as HR director during a period of immense change when the partnership incorporated, was acquired by a US company and then bought and integrated one of its mid-sized rivals. He ended his time there as director of administration for the UK and Europe.
