Organisational culture and EDI | 19 April

As part of its mission to promote good governance, GGI has been hosting facilitated virtual meetings to give NHS non-executive directors an opportunity to share their concerns, challenges and ideas as we rethink the future of health and social care.

The goal is to collectively think about the role NEDs play as part of the controlling mind of their organisations, to discuss immediate safeguarding issues, and to ensure we all learn from this experience to assure better outcomes for citizens in the future.

The event on Friday 19 April at 10.00-11.00 will address the topic Organisational culture and EDI.

The current government questions the success of EDI approaches in our public sector and claims they are ineffective producing impact. In contrast, many would say that our public sector has failed to specifically ‘push’ EDI policies or invest in approaches that will change the status quo. With specific new responsibilities in the Code of Governance for NHS Providers around both organisational culture and EDI in board composition, now is a good time to think through next steps for boards.

The rationale for EDI comes alive when looking at the WRES and WDES figures and triangulating these with recruitment and retention rates, FFT and the staff survey. Employment tribunals too can make sobering reading. Beyond any doubt, failing to make our public sector organisations places that feel fair to all staff impacts on the care and support the public receive.

In this webinar, we will look again at EDI and organisational culture and think through what non-executives should be doing to ensure that their trusts model best practice and create the whole organisation teams needed to deliver support and care to the public.

Helping us through the discussions will be Cedi Frederick, Chair, NHS Kent and Medway.

Cedi Frederick

In a career spanning more than 40 years, Cedi Frederick has held a number of senior management and chief executive positions across the public, not-for-profit and private sectors. Cedi has held member roles on the boards of several housing associations, social care representative and sporting national governing bodies, charities and voluntary organisations. He has also been a non-executive director of two specialist NHS mental health trusts, chair of an NHS hospital trust, governor of Canterbury Christ Church University and, until recently, chair of NHS London’s Vaccine Legacy Equity Group.

Cedi is currently chair of NHS Kent and Medway, chair of the Health and Europe Centre, co-chair of Inspire for Black Londoners and is a non-executive director of Sage Homes and Impact REIT. He is also a Kent Ambassador.

Cedi is owner and managing director of Article Consulting Ltd. Article works with ‘leaders of today and tomorrow’ by supporting their thinking, planning and resilience as well as CEO Consiliaris Digital Systems, a health tech start up. Cedi also runs a successful executive coaching and mentoring practice.

Cedi has been named on four separate occasions as one of Britain's ‘100 Most Influential Black People’; described as '...unsung hero of the third sector, who has changed as many lives in his life outside of work as he has in his job'. In 2015, Cedi was recognised as one of the ‘1,000 Black & Asian Heroes 1950-2010’ by Our Heritage TV.
