Place-based governance in England - a roundtable event | 8 November 2023

02 October 2023

GGI will be hosting a virtual roundtable event where the topic of discussion will focus on ‘Learning from place-based working across ICBs in England’. The discussion will be opened by Richard Watson, Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Strategy and Transformation, Suffolk and North East Essex ICS.

The event will take place on Wednesday, 8 November, from 16.00 to 17.00 and will be run virtually on Zoom.

Back in the early summer GGI undertook some research looking at parts of the country that were going further with the concept of place in the context of the development of integrated care systems. We found that there were a few places where development was more advanced, and these all had some key features (particularly the longevity of relationships) that had helped this along.

Most areas were actively trying to promote some sense of place-based working, and a number of governance models have emerged to enable this to work within the structures of each ICB.

Place featured in the Hewitt Report review of ICBs, although most areas are struggling to find time to prioritise place-related discussions in the context of finance and performance challenges, managing industrial action, and the need to reduce management costs.

At this roundtable event we will present the findings of our work, hear from some areas where place is more developed, and have some thinking time on where to go next with this work.

We will be joined by:

Richard Watson, Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Strategy and Transformation, Suffolk and North East Essex ICS
