Goldberg III: Can the NHS deliver integration? Lessons from around the world

Questioning what exactly is meant by the ‘integration’ mantra has taken David Goldberg’s research beyond England’s shores to look at positive examples of integrated approaches in the other countries of the UK, as well as in the US and Western Europe.

The report explores why integrated care is vital to improving the quality and efficiency of care delivered to the frail elderly and those with multiple long-term conditions. It identifies existing barriers to improving the integration of care in the NHS and between the NHS and social care, and describes what models within the UK and internationally provide insight and direction to the successful integration. It concludes with practical lessons and recommendations to politicians, providers, commissioners and regulators to enable better integrated and co-ordinated care within and beyond the NHS.
